A Hopi asked the desert: ‘Why are you –
cloaked in a sunset of golden hue?
You seem cool at night, yet in daytime you are fire!’
The desert responded: ‘It is my most extreme desire –
to find a new friend – because I must soon replace,
an old friend, who brought me considerable disgrace,
Pastureland was his name, the desert echoed in rage;
friendship with this monster, I could no longer engage.
Hopi Indian – would you be my cool friendly stream?
For love of the Massaw*, many Hopi wish and dream.
And be prepared to perish for Him; every night and day
You face uncaring ranchers, yet you also farm that way.”
